DSTL | Daily Roundup for November 3, 2026

Good afternoon. Halfway through another day. Did you know that today is National Sandwich Day? Well, now you do! (November 3 is the birthday of John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, whose legendary wish to eat without leaving the gaming table is a reminder that good inventions often start by solving your own inconvenience.) Let's get a run-down of what is happening in the ecosystem:

Illinois Innovation Network

No new IIN news posts this week (the newest is the Oct. 21 October newsletter); the Green Career Forum (Nov 5), EnergySense ISU seminars (Nov 4) and Manufacturing & Trades Summit (Nov 10) appeared in prior rundowns.

Illinois, on the Whole

Startups, founders & venture capital

No new Illinois funding-round announcements dated in the window surfaced; last week's Formic, Switched Source and Parasol raises ran in prior rundowns.

Legislation, grants & State programs

  • On economic development, Pritzker, Bailey are miles apart — Capitol News Illinois, Nov 2, 2026. On election eve, Gov. Pritzker touts EDGE credits, REV Act clean-energy incentives and the $400M closing fund that landed Gotion and Rivian, while Darren Bailey calls them corporate welfare and would cut taxes and audit DCEO grant programs; today's vote decides which approach shapes state incentives.

  • Relocation and Establishment of R&D North America Headquarters (FY27-1) (grant opportunity) — Illinois DCEO, Deadline Nov 6, 2026, 5 p.m. DCEO's Strategic Economic Development Program is offering an estimated $5M (one anticipated award, no match) to a pre-qualified company relocating or establishing an R&D North American headquarters in Illinois.

Still open from prior rundowns: DCEO Innovation Vouchers and Illinois Economic Empowerment Centers (both due Nov 6), Tourism Attraction grants (Nov 13), Edwardsville Site Readiness (Nov 16) and Food Deserts Round 3 (Dec 9); the General Assembly's veto session opens Nov 17.

Chicago Quantum Exchange

Failure of the day: Documentary examines rise and fall of Schwinn, once America's bike maker — Jefferson City News-Tribune (Tribune News Service), Dec 8, 2025 (historical). Chicago's Schwinn, once the dominant American bicycle brand, closed its Chicago plants in 1983, was slow to adapt during the BMX and mountain-bike booms and filed for Chapter 11 in 1992 under fourth-generation family ownership. Lesson: Market leadership is never permanent; a brand that stops listening to where its customers are heading can be overtaken by upstarts and offshore rivals within a decade.

Affirmation of the Day: Tuesday is for momentum: I will make one call I have been avoiding, ship one thing that is good enough, and trust that steady work compounds faster than perfect plans.

App of the Day: Bear: Markdown Notes & Journal — A privacy-focused Markdown note-taking app for writing, organizing and linking notes, journals, lists and sketches with tags; rated 4.7 stars with about 6,900 App Store ratings, free with an optional Pro subscription.

Useless Tidbit: Peoria was such a reliable bellwether test market in the 1960s and '70s that Pampers disposable diapers, the McRib and New Coke were all tried on Peorians before going national, the consumer-marketing heir to vaudeville's 'Will it play in Peoria?' (Source: Peoria Magazine (WTVP))

Well, there is the daily run-down. Check out what is happening across the ecosystem, share good news, celebrate the wins, and be a good human.

As always, thanks for tuning in to the DSTL Daily Rundown!
