DSTL | Daily Roundup for November 2, 2026

Good afternoon. Halfway through another day. Did you know that today is National Deviled Egg Day? Well, now you do! (Celebrates the potluck staple whose "deviled" name dates to 1786, when the word meant zesty and spiced-up; founders, take the hint and give your plain-vanilla pitch a little kick this week.) Let's get a run-down of what is happening in the ecosystem:

Illinois Innovation Network

Illinois, on the Whole

Startups, founders & venture capital

  • US startup Formic raises $50 million to scale physical AI — Evertiq, Oct 26, 2026. • Southern Illinois Source injects hope into dragging downstate news landscape — Capitol News Illinois, Oct 27, 2026. Veteran journalists from the Illinois Press Foundation, Capitol News Illinois and SIU's journalism school are launching a nonprofit newsroom startup to fill downstate coverage gaps and pay student reporters, with the Press Foundation as fiscal sponsor and fundraising still the key hurdle.

Legislation, grants & State programs

  • Career and Technical Education Enrollment Grows by Nearly 6 Percent at Illinois Community Colleges — Office of Gov. JB Pritzker / ICCB, Oct 27, 2026. Fall 2026 CTE enrollment rose 5.9% to 75,208 students, a nine-year high that now makes up 27.7% of all community college enrollment, which the governor and ICCB credit to state investment in hands-on workforce pipelines for employers.

  • Get ready for a buzz kill: As of Nov. 12, liquor stores can't sell THC drinks — WGLT, Oct 30, 2026. A new federal law reclassifying products with more than 0.4 mg of total THC as cannabis takes effect in Illinois Nov. 12 (federally Dec. 11), forcing liquor stores and restaurants to pull hemp-derived THC beverages and pushing sales to licensed dispensaries.

The BUILD housing plan funds five IHDA programs including the now-open Opening Doors down-payment program, a Permanent Supportive Housing developer round opening in November 2026 and New Homes Illinois municipal requests in spring 2027, pitched as construction jobs and workforce-housing relief for a 142,000-unit shortfall.

  • Tourism Private Sector Grant Program (FY27-1) — Illinois DCEO (grant listing), due Nov 13, 2026. DCEO expects to make about 20 matching awards of $10,000 to $50,000 to private-sector tourism businesses and attractions, with applications due 5 PM Nov. 13 via the online form.

Failure of the day: Despite Stunning Failure, Motorola Wins — The Seattle Times (Bloomberg News), Oct 24, 1999 (historical). Lesson: Schaumburg-based Motorola's $5 billion Iridium satellite-phone network went bankrupt nine months after launch because its heavy, pricey handsets didn't work indoors or in cars while cheap cellular spread faster than anyone planned for — flawless engineering can't save a product the market has already moved past.

Affirmation of the Day: November is a fresh page, and I'm the one holding the pen; today I pick the one thing that matters most and build it before the noise arrives.

App of the Day: Things 3 — an award-winning to-do and project planner that lets you capture tasks, map projects and plan each day in a clean, fast interface; rated 4.8 stars with about 28,000 App Store ratings, $9.99 one-time purchase on iPhone (no subscription).

Useless Tidbit: Lydia Moss Bradley, who founded Bradley Polytechnic Institute in 1897 at age 81, was the first woman in America to sit on a national bank board (First National Bank of Peoria) and is credited as one of the first American women to draw up a prenuptial agreement.
