Failure of the day: No Business Plan Survives First Contact With A Customer – The 5.2 billion dollar mistake — Steve Blank, Nov 1, 2010 (historical). Iridium, conceived inside Schaumburg-based Motorola in 1987 and spun out in 1990, spent about $5.2 billion and 11 years building a 66-satellite phone network, then filed for Chapter 11 nine months after its first call in 1998 with roughly 30,000 subscribers against a forecast of 42 million, as $3,000 handsets and $7-a-minute calls lost to cheap cellular; new investors later bought the whole network for $25 million. Lesson: a plan locked to the market conditions of the day it was written will be obsolete by launch, so build in ways to learn from customers and pivot before the money is spent.
Affirmation of the Day: It is Wednesday, the hinge of the week, and I get to choose which way it swings; I will close one loop I have been avoiding and let that small finish carry me into Thursday with a lighter mind.
App of the Day: Todoist: To Do List & Calendar — a cross-platform task manager that captures to-dos in plain language, sorts them into projects, labels and recurring reminders, and now lays them out on a calendar view synced with Google Calendar; free, with Todoist Pro at $6.99 a month or $59.99 a year. Rated 4.8 stars from about 130,000 ratings on the U.S. App Store.
Useless Tidbit: British scientists arrived at Peoria's USDA Northern Regional Research Laboratory on July 14, 1941, and the lab's deep-vat fermentation in corn steep liquor, using a Penicillium strain found on a moldy cantaloupe from a Peoria market, scaled penicillin from nearly priceless in 1940 to $20 a dose by July 1943 and 55 cents a dose three years later.
