Failure of the day: Former Executives of Outcome Health Convicted in $1B Corporate Fraud Scheme — U.S. Attorney's Office, Northern District of Illinois, Apr 11, 2023 (historical). Chicago health-tech darling Outcome Health sold pharma ads on screens in doctors' offices, but from 2011 to 2017 its leaders sold inventory they did not have, under-delivered campaigns, billed clients anyway and fed fabricated data to auditors, using the inflated revenue to raise roughly $1 billion in debt and equity before the scheme collapsed. Co-founder and CEO Rishi Shah was later sentenced to 7.5 years in prison, president Shradha Agarwal to three years in a halfway house and CFO/COO Brad Purdy to 27 months. Lesson: Metrics you have to fabricate are not growth; a startup built on numbers that cannot survive an audit is a liability, not a company.
