And Now for the Wrap-Up

Failure of the day: Samuel Insull: the Chicago utility king whose holding-company empire collapsed in 1932 — Encyclopaedia Britannica. Insull built Chicago Edison into Commonwealth Edison and powered most of Illinois, then stacked layer upon layer of holding companies and promoted their stock until the Depression sent them into receivership in 1932; he fled to Europe, was brought back and tried three times, and acquitted each time. Lesson: a great operating business can be destroyed by the financial structure built on top of it; leverage and hype turn an ordinary downturn into a total wipeout.

Affirmation of the Day: I do not need every answer today, only the next honest step; I will take it, learn from what it teaches me, and keep building.

App of the Day: Genius Scan (Scanner App) — Turns your iPhone or iPad camera into a document scanner that auto-crops and cleans up receipts, contracts and notes and exports them as multi-page PDFs; free, with in-app purchases. Rated 4.9 stars, about 1.4 million ratings on the U.S. App Store.

Useless Tidbit: In 1837, blacksmith John Deere built the first successful steel plow in Grand Detour, Illinois, from a broken sawmill blade; by 1856 his Moline shop was selling more than 13,000 plows a year. (Source: Illinois State Historical Society marker; National Inventors Hall of Fame)
