Failure of the day: Avery Co. Tractor History: The Development of the Avery Tractor — Farm Collector. Peoria's Avery Company was one of America's biggest makers of steam engines, threshers and tractors in the 1910s, but its six-ton single-cylinder tractor performed so badly at the 1910 Winnipeg trials it was withdrawn mid-test, it stuck with a heavy, dated sliding-frame design into 1924, and the 1920s farm depression pushed it into bankruptcy that year; after reorganizing it built no tractors until 1938 and faded away during World War II.
