Failure of the day: The Day the U.S. TV Industry Died: Why the last major U.S. television set maker, Zenith, finally gave up — IEEE Spectrum, Aug 1988 (historical). Lesson: Chicago's Zenith, whose slogan was 'the quality goes in before the name goes on,' halved its research staff twice, bet on videodiscs over VCRs and clung to old manufacturing and distribution models, and the lesson is that cutting R&D and moving slowly in a thin-margin market lets faster, cheaper rivals eat you alive (Zenith was sold to LG and filed Chapter 11 in 1999).

Useless Tidbit: The high-yielding penicillin mold that made mass production possible in World War II was found on a moldy cantaloupe from a Peoria market in 1943 and cultured at the USDA Northern Regional Research Laboratory in Peoria, where scientists also invented the deep-tank fermentation method used to make the drug at scale; in 2021 Illinois named that strain (Penicillium rubens NRRL 1951) its official State Microbe.
